Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic

Approximately 80% of children with cancer will survive into adulthood. However, most experience some type of late effect from either the cancer or its treatment.

Children’s long-term follow-up clinic monitors cancer survivors for late effects and address any problems that are discovered. Children’s oncologists recommend at least one visit to the clinic. Any survivor of childhood cancer, regardless of age, is encouraged to visit.

A multidisciplinary team at the clinic diagnoses and treats late effects, such as impaired fertility, compromised lung function, psychological issues, heart problems, learning disabilities, growth issues, and joint problems. Care begins with the hematology/oncology team, and if necessary involves more extensive care with in-hours Children’s specialists such as pediatric gynecologists, neuropsychologists, endocrinologists, and cardiologists, who are experienced in treating former pediatric cancer patients. The team:

  • Reviews a summary of your cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Answers questions about your cancer and its treatment and explains special risks you may face.
  • Reviews your medical history and recommends preventive and ongoing care.
  • Performs a physical exam and reviews lab work and other tests.
  • Provides advice and assistance with school, job, and/or insurance issues.
  • Serves as a resource for your primary care physician.
  • Enrolls patients in research studies, if desired, that test new treatments for late effects.
