Kohl’s and Children’s Influenza Prevention Project for Kids awards $3,000 to Dassel-Cokato Middle School

Minneapolis/St. Paul (February 11, 2010) – The Kohl’s and Children’s Influenza Prevention Project for Kids awarded students at Dassel-Cokato Middle School $3,000 for their public service announcement, “Don’t Be Flu-Lish: Tips for Staying Healthy This Flu Season.”

The students competed against 46 entries in a contest presented by the Influenza Prevention Project for Kids, a collaboration between Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota and the Kohl’s Cares for KidsŪ program.

The second place prize of $1,500 went to East Grand Forks Central Middle School and the third place prize of $1,000 went to Sauk Rapids-Rice Senior High School.

Entries were judged on accuracy, influenza prevention messages, appeal to high school and middle school students, and creativity. The students will be presented with a check at an all school assembly Feb. 11. In addition to the check presentation, the assembly will include influenza prevention education activities and giveaways, including free bottles of Smart and Silky™ foaming hand sanitizer for kids.

“We are proud of the creativity and originality our students displayed in producing this video,” said Sue Sparboe, teacher and video advisor from Dassel-Cokato Middle School.. “Influenza prevention is an important topic, especially for school children who need to understand how to stay healthy during the flu season. We are thrilled that a team of our students saw this contest as an opportunity to create a fun and educational announcement for their peers.”
