More radiology resources for families

See our Radiology page for more information, tips, and support resources to help you and your child prepare for a radiology test. This includes patient/family education materials, guidelines for eating and drinking, how child life staff work with children and adolescents to minimize the stress they can feel before a radiology test, and other information so that you know what to expect during your child’s visit.

Nitrous sedation

The nitrous oxide sedation program at Children’s is a breakthrough, award-winning program. Children’s is the first hospital in the United States to have specially trained registered nurses, under the direction of a physician, administer nitrous oxide to children for sedation.

Patients are awake but calm during its administration before and during the procedure.

Nitrous oxide frees patients from the side effects typically associated with other sedatives. While other sedatives may stay in a child’s system for hours, nitrous oxide quickly leaves children’s systems, enabling them to resume normal activities such as school.

Anesthesia services

Anesthesia may be recommended for some patients undergoing an MRI, CT scan, or ABR. Anesthesia is best described to a young child as “a medicine to help you sleep so you don’t feel anything during the procedure.” A nurse, child life specialist, and the anesthesia team will meet with you before your child’s procedure to help prepare all of you, and to answer your questions.

Talk with your physician or pediatric radiologist if you feel anesthesia may be an option for your child prior to an MRI, CT scan, or ABR.
