Checklist

This checklist will help you prepare for your child’s surgery. Unless your doctor specifies otherwise, please follow these instructions:

Immediately

  • Pre-register online.
  • Arrange for a pre-operative physical and history exam within seven days before surgery. This may be done by your surgeon or by the child’s primary care doctor

Monday before surgery

Attend a tour of Children’s - Minnetonka, which is held at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (optional). Pre-surgery videos for parents and teens are also available on our Planning for Surgery page.

The day of surgery

  • Follow your child’s doctor’s instructions about foods and clear liquids.
  • Follow your child’s doctor’s instructions about medicine.
  • Bring a case for your child’s eyeglasses or contact lens case and solution.
  • Remove all jewelry and nail polish
  • Bring your medical insurance card.
  • Bring security objects, such as a pacifier, blanket, bottle or sipping cup, stuffed toy, or headphones and music player.
  • Bring history and physical form and any laboratory results.
  • We recommend that you make child care arrangement for siblings.

Following surgery

  • Follow at-home instructions from your doctor and the day surgery center.
  • Day care is not recommended for your child on the day of surgery.
  • Call your doctor if you have questions about your child’s progress or call Children’s - Minnetonka at (952) 930-8655.
  • In case of emergency, call the Children’s - Minneapolis emergency department at (612) 813-6117 or call 911 if immediate help is needed.
