Preparing for the day of surgery

After you and your doctor decide to use the Children’s - Minnetonka day surgery center, it is important for you to know the following:

  • Your child must have a physical examination within seven days before surgery to make sure your child is in good health. This may be done by your surgeon or by the child’s primary care doctor.

  • You have the option to attend an informative pre-surgery program/tour. Tours are held Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Children’s - Minnetonka and are intended to help patients, siblings, and their parents understand and learn about what to expect before, during, and after surgery.

  • In addition to a physical exam, X-rays and lab work may be needed. Before sedation or anesthesia, females who are 12 years old or who have begun menstruating also must receive a urine pregnancy test. This can be done at the time of the physical exam or before surgery at Children’s - Minnetonka.

  • Please register online or fill out and mail an admission questionnaire provided by Children’s - Minnetonka. This information will be confirmed on the day of your child’s visit.

  • Please bring your history and physical form and insurance card the day of surgery.

  • If your child becomes sick before surgery - even with a minor ailment such as a cold - please notify your doctor immediately (the same day your child becomes sick). Surgery may need to be postponed.

  • It is important that you or another responsible adult stay with your child throughout your visit at Children’s - Minnetonka. You can expect to stay two to eight hours, depending on the type of surgery. A lounge and a vending area are available for your convenience. A café is also available on site.

  • A consent form for surgery and for anesthesia must be signed by a parent or legal guardian within 48 hours of surgery. This is usually done the day of the procedure.

  • You may plan to bring a favorite toy or blanket for your child’s comfort. It may be helpful for toddler’s to have their own drinking cup, for use after surgery.

  • Plan to have your child wear comfortable clothing. We will provide pajamas for your child to wear during surgery.

  • A nurse will try to call you a few days before surgery to review information and answer questions. Please be ready to give the nurse detailed information about your child’s medicines. If surgery is on Monday, you will be called on the Friday before. You may also call our pre-surgery line, (952) 930-8655 or 1-800-438-5285 between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • An interpreter is available to you at no cost. Interpreters must be employees of or contracted by Children’s.
