Training Programs

Various levels of learners rotate through the Medical Education Department of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. They are from:

Medical Schools

Medical students from the University of Minnesota (UMN) receive pediatric training during their 3rd or 4th year clerkships and during their second year introduction to clinical medicine. Periodically, we also train Costa Rican medical students, Physician Assistant (PA) students, and medical students from other training institutions.

Residency Programs

Children’s is a training site for residents from the UMN Departments of Pediatrics, Medicine-Pediatrics, and Family Medicine and Community Health. We provide core rotations in inpatient pediatrics, child abuse, emergency medicine and neonatal intensive care. Elective rotations are also available in:

Behavioral pediatrics

Ambulatory pediatrics

Cardiology

Emergency medicine

Gastroenterology

Neonatology

Pulmonology

Pediatric surgery

Radiology

Dermatology

Neurology

Children’s also provides rotations in inpatient pediatrics to family practice residents from Regions Hospital in St. Paul, United Hospital in St. Paul, and Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, South Dakota. Also available is pediatric surgery for 5th year residents from Hennepin County Medical Center and 7th year residents from the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery, pediatric urology for 3rd/5th year residents from Mayo Clinic, and neonatal intensive care for obstetrics and gynecology residents from Regions Family Medicine Program.
