Intern ED Rotation letter
Dear Pediatric Intern,
Welcome to the intern pediatric emergency medicine rotation at Children's Hospitals and Clinic- Minneapolis. This rotation consists of ED shifts interspersed throughout your Behavioral, elective and PCF rotations. You are excused from responsibilities on those rotations when doing an ED shift.
You will be assigned approximately 5-10 weekend shifts and 8-12 weekday shifts. Weekday shifts are from 1pm to 10pm. Weekend shifts are from 8am to 8pm. Please check Amion for your schedule of shifts. If there are conflicts, you can trade shifts with other residents. Please let one of the chief residents know if you plan to trade shifts so that Amion can be updated. If you become ill and cannot make it to a shift, contact the chief resident on call. (call the University at 612-273-3000 or check Amion)
On the day of your first shift, please come one hour early to the ED to complete medical education department paperwork (see below) and ED electronic medical record training (Firstnet). A computer module has been developed for you to run through as you start. It can be accessed at S:/training/firstnettraining/firstnetprovidertraining in the ED or by accessing the Powerkids training site on the Children's web site in-house. ED staff can help you locate this training module and will be available to answer questions. The training should take about 30 minutes.
Minneapolis Children's electronic medical record is CERNER/Powerchart. As mentioned above, the ED uses Firstnet, which is a customized version of CERNER. You will need to enroll in the online enrollment system on the Children's Website. This link allows Students and Residents to utilize the on-line ENROLLMENT process who will be rotating on the campuses of Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota to complete required documentation by security, HIPPA, and ACGME compliance regulations. PLEASE make sure you indicate which program you are from and submit a verifiable email address to complete the enrollment. You will need to update your enrollment for every rotation and each experience at Children's.
Also, you will need to complete the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) training before you begin at Children’s as well. This process takes at least 1.5 hours to complete. The information on how to complete this mandatory training is:

2. If this is your first enrollment, the process will take approximately 30-45 minutes. If you return to either Children's campuses you will only need to "update" your information and this will take just 5-10 min.
3. You will need your immunization dates to complete the enrollment form. If you are a Univ. of MN student or resident, you can go to your "MY-U"on the U of M website, under the health and wellness section, to view a copy of your immunizations. NOTE: All sections of the enrollment form must be completed to gain computer access at Children's. Parking is provided during this rotation. On your first day, go to the medical education office in the basement of Minneapolis Children's Hospital (across from the Starz café) and ask for Corinne Wilcox. She will provide you with a parking pass. If she is not there, a parking voucher can be obtained from a clipboard hanging by her door. Just sign it, and take a parking voucher. The only other form you need to obtain will be the Photo I.D. Badge form. Please complete the form and take it to the first floor Photo I.D. department to obtain your ID badge. (extra forms are in the slot above the parking voucher area on the wall).
If your first shift is on a weekend, go to the ED at the start of your shift. Complete the computer training and get a voucher from the clipboard in the medical education office as described above. The paperwork can be filled out later when you're here during a weekday.
We hope you find your time in the ED both educational and enjoyable. Let us know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
