Summer Program Application Requirements

Between March 1 and April 1, we accept applications for our summer volunteer program, which is open to students (junior high, high school, and college) only. NEW FOR 2012: Summer applications will only be accepted during this four-week period!

Qualifications for the summer volunteer program:

1. Applications must be complete and are due by April 1.

2. Applicants must be at least 14 years old by the April 1 application deadline.

3. The summer volunteer program runs from June-August; exact start dates are flexible, depending on students' end-of-school schedules. A maximum of 2 absences are allowed - No Exceptions. If you will miss more than 2 times, we ask that you not apply.

4. All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation session. You will receive orientation dates at your personal interview.

5. Due to a limited number of volunteer positions, as well as first priority for scheduling going to current Children’s Hospital volunteers, we cannot guarantee that every applicant that applies will get a position even if they meet all of the above criteria.

Getting Started:

All summer volunteers must complete our 3-step process: online application, interview, and orientation. All interested summer volunteers who meet the qualifications are to complete the online application. We will begin contacting summer applicants after April 1 to set up interviews. During the interview, we will discuss your experience working with children, availability, and potential placement options. Applicants 18 years of age and older will complete a background check form.

Step 1: Application

Apply online. Before you start your online application, please note that you must have your immunization records and immunity status for tuberculosis. Please call your health care provider to schedule a Mantoux test if you have not had one within the past 12 months.

Step 2: Interview

Once your volunteer application has been received in our office, we will review your availability and preferred service areas. We will contact you to set up a personal interview if your availability matches our summer needs. Applicants will be contacted either by the email address that was submitted on the application or by phone.

Step 3: Orientation

Orientation is 2 and ½ hours long. . All volunteers must attend a general orientation. Orientations are held in Minneapolis and St Paul. At your personal interview you will be provided with orientation registration, dates, and times.
