Summer Program Application Requirements
During the months of March, April, and May we only accept applications for our summer volunteer program, which consists of students (junior high, high school, and college). All other applications will be held and applicants will be contacted in August.
Qualifications for the summer volunteer program include:
1. Applications must be complete and are due by May 1.
2. Applicants must be at least 14 years old by the May 1 application deadline.
3. The summer volunteer program runs June 15 - August 14, however volunteers may start earlier. A maximum of 2 absences are allowed – No Exceptions. If you will miss more than 2 times we ask that you not apply.
4. All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation session. You will receive orientation dates at your personal interview.
5. Due to a limited number of volunteer positions, and first priority for scheduling going to current Children’s Hospital volunteers, we cannot guarantee that every applicant that applies will get a position even if they meet all of the above criteria.
Getting Started:
All summer volunteers must complete our 3-step process: online application, interview, and orientation. All interested summer volunteers who meet the qualifications are to complete the online application. We will begin contacting summer applicants after May 1 to set up interviews. During the interview, we will discuss your experience working with children, availability, and potential placement options. Applicants 16 years of age and older will complete a background check form.
Step 1: Application
Apply on-line. Before you start your on-line application please note that you must have your immunization records and immunity status for tuberculosis. Please call your health care provider to schedule a Mantoux if you have not had one in the past 12 months. After you complete your application, your recommendation will need to be completed via on-line. Your confirmation will be emailed to you, which is for your personal or professional reference to use (excluding family members). We will not receive your application until your recommendation form has been completed.
Step 2: Interview
Once your volunteer application has been received in our office it will be reviewed. If your application is NOT complete or is missing information we will send you a letter along with instructions of what is missing and how to complete the application. Please remember to bring in your school/work planner. Applicants will be contacted either by the email address that was submitted on the application or by phone.
Step 3: Orientation
Orientation is 2 and ½ hours long. It is mandatory for all new volunteers. Volunteers on the Minneapolis and West Children’s campuses attend orientation at Children’s – Minneapolis. Volunteers on the St. Paul, Woodwinds, and Roseville Children’s campuses attend orientation at Children’s – St. Paul. At your personal interview you will be provided with orientation registration, dates, and times.
Thank you for thinking of Children’s. We look forward to having you on our volunteer team. Please call us at (612) 813-6200 (Children’s – Minneapolis) or (651) 220-6141 (Children’s – St. Paul) if you have any additional questions.
