Visitors from China bring international perspective

|
In November, Children’s had the pleasure of hosting nine nursing students and three faculty members from Huzhou University in China. Elsa Batica from Interpreter Services visited Huzhou University last year with fellow nursing classmates and faculty from Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC). Batica’s visit to China led to an invitation to students and staff from Huzhou University to visit Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. Batica worked with the Center for Professional Development and Practice to develop a schedule that allowed the Chinese exchange students to learn about nursing at Children’s.

Their visit to Children’s included a variety of activities and informational sessions with numerous departments. The group received a warm welcome from Ginger Malone, MSN, RN, chief nursing officer, and then had the opportunity to meet with interpreter services, social work, child life, and nursing education. Their time at Children’s ended with hands-on experience in the skills learning lab, as well as a hospital tour. This combination of activities gave the students and staff members a chance to gain a better understanding of pediatric nursing.
The group visited other hospitals in the Twin Cities area with the goal of increasing their understanding of nursing in the United States. They also traveled to hospitals in the New York area during their 12-day visit to the United States.
Children’s reaps the benefits from this kind of global exchange by sharing ideas and exploring care from a different perspective. If you know of a group of nurses or other health care professionals from across the globe who may be interested in an experience like the one our Chinese visitors were able to enjoy, please contact the Center for Professional Development and Practice to set up a visit. This is the kind of educational experience we would like to offer to more groups or individuals. We were all very excited to be able to work with these international visitors.
The Center for Professional Development and Practice thanks Ginger Malone, Boris Kalanj, Hannah Howell, Jeanine Clapsaddle, Elsa Batica, Laure Orgon, and representatives from Minneapolis Community Technical College for sharing their time and knowledge with the Huzhou University students and staff.
