Speakers Bureau to Target Nurse Audiences

By Lynn Eidahl

Children’s Nursing Outreach is working to increase nursing participation in Children’s Speakers Bureau to include more hands-on nurse experts (RNs and Advanced Practice RNs) to speak to nursing audiences. The number of requests for nurses to speak on various neonatal and pediatric topics continues to grow. Often, audiences include nurses at referral hospitals who usually care for adults but less often care for infants and children in their emergency department, medical-surgical unit, or OB unit/nursery. In 2007, a total of 52 Speakers Bureau nursing presentations were given to more than 725 nurses and other allied health professionals.

The most frequently requested topics include:

  • S.T.A.B.L.E (a neonatal continuing education program focused on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick newborns)
  • Management of Respiratory Illnesses in the Pediatric Patient
  • Pediatric Pain Management
  • Gastroenteritis: Nursing Care and Interventions
  • Pediatric and Neonatal IV Starts
  • Pediatric Nursing Care in the Non-Pediatric Setting
  • Differences in Nursing Care for Children versus Adults
  • Pediatric Orthopedic Nursing Care
  • Newborn Respiratory Assessment
  • General Newborn and Pediatric Nursing Assessment
  • Hyperbilirubinemia
  • Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy Nursing Care
  • Pediatric Urology Nursing Care and Interventions

Participation in the Speakers Bureau is voluntary. Requests for presentations are fulfilled based on topic and speaker availability. Each request is coordinated through Nursing Outreach, and a Speakers Bureau member can choose to accept or decline a request. Mileage and other costs are reimbursed per Children’s policies.
