Two Daisy Awards presented Oct. 23

|
The Center for Professional Development and Practice, The DAISY Foundation, and United Healthcare presented two Children’s nurses with DAISY awards on Oct. 23. Judith Sugimura, RN, intermediate care unit, and Sally Gonzalez, RN, NICU, were both honored by families.
Judith Sugimura was nominated by a mother of a patient who is also a nurse. The nomination praised Judy as “the kind of nurse I strive to be for my own patients. She was very professional, knowledgeable and compassionate, and I felt she genuinely cared not only for my child, but for our whole family. Words cannot express how the care we received during such an uncertain and scary time made an impact on our entire family.”

Sally Gonzalez’s nomination read, “Sally gave us encouragement as parents, including tips for post-discharge care of our child. Sally always had a positive attitude, was respectful, courteous, compassionate, and even motherly. Sally made our NICU experience very rewarding.”
The DAISY award was initiated by the DAISY Foundation in 2000 in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 from complications of ITP, an uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique way of thanking nurses for making a difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. The DAISY award is sponsored by United Healthcare and they have contributed nearly $67,000 to the DAISY Foundation.
Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians, and employees are encouraged to nominate a deserving nurse by completing a nomination form. Children’s Professional Development Council reviews nominations and selects award winners quarterly.
