Children’s of Minnesota named among U.S. News’ ‘America’s Best Children’s Hospitals’ for second consecutive year

National reputation keeps growing as Upper Midwest’s largest pediatric hospital lauded for respiratory care and neonatology

(MINNEAPOLIS/ST.PAUL, May 30, 2008)—U.S. News & World Report has named Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota one of the nation’s finest pediatric hospitals.

“The U.S. News survey confirms what we know well: When families whose children require highly sophisticated care come to us, we deliver results that stand among the finest in the nation,” said Alan L. Goldbloom, MD, President and CEO of Children’s “Minnesota has long been recognized for excellence in medical care. We are thrilled and proud to bring this honor to the entire state and elevate Minnesota’s profile in pediatric excellence.”

U.S. News’ specialty rankings placed Children’s among the nation’s best in care for respiratory disorders, particularly cystic fibrosis, and neonatology, the care of infants born prematurely or with other complications.

  • Children’s was one of only six hospitals out of 30 to earn the highest possible score for clinical outcomes for cystic fibrosis. The U.S. News honors reinforce the standing of Children’s cystic fibrosis program, which has received top national rankings for success in lung function and nutrition, two key success factors in young patients.

  • Children’s was awarded the highest scores possible in key areas examined in the neonatal care rankings. With the state’s largest high-risk neonatal referral program, Children’s has a long track record of recognition for excellence in clinical outcomes and leadership in clinical research and care innovation.

In addition, the survey found Children’s has nurse-to-patient staffing levels that are among the nation’s highest. Children’s was also recognized for its designation as a Magnet hospital, bestowed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The U.S. News honors continue a pattern of national recognition for excellence at Children’s. For three consecutive years, Children’s has been among a handful of pediatric hospitals honored as the nation’s best in a survey by the Leapfrog Group. The Leapfrog Group is a much-respected consortium that advocates for clinical quality and patient safety in hospitals.

“None of this would be possible without the tremendous skill and professionalism of the employees and professional staff throughout Children’s, as well as the support we receive from the community,” Goldbloom said.

The survey compared results from 113 pediatric hospitals in the United States. The magazine will publish “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals” in its June 9 edition, which will be available on newsstands next Monday.
