Red-Vested Rockstar: Cory Kopel

Cory KopelWhy he rocks: “Our daughter spent 48 hrs in the NICU for precautionary reasons after her birth.  Although our stay in the NICU was short, seeing those families made me think how difficult it must be to be there for a long period.  So that, along with seeing athletes interact with the children over the years in hospitals peaked my interest further to look into volunteering. I coached youth hockey for 5 years up until we had our daughter, so this is a great opportunity to continue interacting with kids.  My wife always says I act like a kid, so it’s always been a great fit interacting with kids!”

Favorite thing to do outside of volunteering? “We enjoy hanging out with friends and family. We enjoy being active and spending time outdoors, camping, hiking or just grilling and playing yard games!  I personally am a big sports fan and my time with the guys is spent golfing, playing men’s league softball and hockey.”

Do you have any kids or pets of your own?  “We have a 14 month old daughter McKinley and a 4 year old cat named Tabby.”

If you could create a new candy bar, what would be in it and what would you name it? “A Butterfinger Blizzard Ice Cream Bar.”

Share a favorite volunteer experience or story:  “Although I’m relatively new, I noticed right away the carefree happy spirits of the kids and how their imaginations remain intact regardless of their current circumstance.  I will always remember my first day when I was a little nervous on what to expect, but within 5 minutes a little girl had me ‘babysitting’ her babies and making dinner at ‘the farm’. The experience has been very enjoyable and hopefully there will be more opportunities to escape my suburban life and spend more time on ‘the farm’!”
