Gigi Chawla, MD, senior medical director of primary care for Children’s Minnesota, joined WCCO Mid-Morning hosts Kylie Bearse and Jason DeRusha to discuss potentially challenging conversations parents can have with their teenage children.
Dr. Chawla recommends to start thinking about talking about the difficult stuff when kids are young.
Some of the most-common topics parents deal with are:
- The HPV vaccine, including what it is and when to get it.
- How difficult teens’ lives are
- The challenge teens face managing complex relationships
- Depression and anxiety; understand how they’re feeling
Honesty is important, so be as truthful as possible with your child. Have them learn from your mistakes.
