Red-Vested Rockstar: Shelly Gill Murray

Shelly Gill MurrayWhy she rocks: “My name is Shelly Gill Murray and I have been a Surgery Family Waiting Room volunteer for two years.  After sitting in the family waiting room myself a few times, I felt a pull to help others through the process and applied to volunteer.”

What is your favorite thing to do outside of volunteering? “Outside of volunteering, you can find me walking around the Minneapolis lakes or at my cabin paddle boarding, kayaking, or fishing.  I like to travel and have been to 20 countries for vacation and mission work.”

Do you have any kids or pets of your own? “I live in South Minneapolis with my husband, my three high school kids, and my dog Penny.”

If you could create a new candy bar, what would be in it and what would you name it? “If I could create a new candy bar it would have pretzels, peanut butter, and dark chocolate.  I would call it the “over fifty heart stopper.”

Share a favorite volunteer experience or story: “Most of the families I encounter in the family waiting room are filled with worry while their children are in surgery.  One of the most heartwarming experiences I had is when a large group of family and friends were all wearing matching t-shirts to support a teenager in surgery. When the surgeon came out and announced the tumor he removed contained no cancer, the whole group let out the hugest cheer!”
