Red-Vested Rockstar: Valerie Beery

valerie-beery-rvrWhy she rocks: “I had never stepped foot inside a hospital prior to applying to volunteer, but what sparked my interest was when my aunt Jana started to have some health issues. I chose Children’s because I have always loved playing with kids and I’m so glad I did! I am a senior at Edina high school while also attending Normandale Community College full-time through the PSEO program. I aspire to become a Pediatrician here at Children’s hospital. I am also currently in training to become a Certified Nursing Assistant this fall, and I work at Starbucks!”

What is your favorite thing to do outside of volunteering? “My favorite thing to do when not volunteering is to draw, but my guilty pleasure is baking. I love baking rainbow cupcakes, red velvet cake pops, and caramel brownies!”

Do you have any kids or pets of your own? “I have one tiny dog named Nikki. She is a rat terrier, but she gets mistaken for a Chihuahua since she is so tiny and has big ears!”

If you could create a new candy bar, what would be in it and what would you name it? “If I could create a new candy bar it would be a Nutella chocolate bar (since I love Nutella!) with Pop-Rocks inside. I would definitely call it ‘Ka-Boom’ since it was explode in your mouth!”

Share a favorite volunteer experience or story: “I would say my favorite volunteer experience was when I was with a young girl who loved to color. I walked into the 7th Floor Playroom with the intent to clean the numerous dirty toys, but instead saw a girl coloring, so I decided to grab some markers and join her. She was so energetic, so I turned on the radio, put in a Kids Bop CD, and we danced like crazy! Some other kids walked by and decided to join in, and by the end of the night, we had a big dance party in the Playroom. We all had a blast and the kids made great friendships with the other children on their floor.”
