Fun ways to give back with kids during the holidays

The holiday season is a perfect time to teach children about the importance of giving back to those in need. Even if you personally don’t have much to give, there are many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of others.

It’s never too early or too late to start teaching children about the importance of giving and helping others. Here are five fun ways your family can give back during the holiday season in your community and beyond. Be creative and add your own ideas to the list!

How can kids give back?

Take care of the planet.

Start giving back by looking in your own back yard! Help a neighbor by raking leaves or pick up litter and teach our kids about the importance of recycling. Together, there is a lot we can all do to keep our community beautiful.

Make a donation.

When you make a donation, explain to your child what you are doing and who it helps. Have your child collect change around the house or give him or her an allowance that they can donate to the charity of their choice in exchange for doing extra chores around the house. Even small amounts can add up fast!

SUPPORT CHILDREN’S

Give to support the most amazing people on earth.

Get crafty.

Work with your child to make care packages or hygiene kits for a local homeless shelter, hospitals or nursing homes. Decorate the bags or include handwritten notes and cards from your child. Remember to call ahead to see what each place accepts in terms of gifts or snacks.

Clean out the closet.

The holiday season is a great time for your children to donate any clothes, coats toys and books that they’ve outgrown. Let your child look through toy bins and closets for items that have been lightly-used another kid can still enjoy.

Kids can also shop for toys that they’d like, but will donate to a local charity or cause. You can help children who have to spend the holidays in the hospital by providing the gift of new toys, crafts and other items for children of all ages — infants through teens.

Walk for a cause.

Find a cause to support or a volunteer opportunity that the entire family can do together. Let your child choose a cause-related walk that is important to them and make it a family activity by asking family members and neighbors to sponsor you and your child to raise money for an organization leading up to the event.

Gather your friends and family members and celebrate the amazing kids in your life! Support Children’s Minnesota at our newest event, Walk for Amazing.

As a nonprofit, Children’s Minnesota provides nearly $100 million in charitable and unreimbursed care for kids who need it most. This is only possible through support from donations made by people like you. Your gift this holiday season can mean so much more. Donate to Children’s Minnesota and help us make a difference in the lives of children – the most amazing people on earth.
