First Give initiative at Children’s welcomes Native American babies to the world

Lisa Skjefte, an American Indian community liaison at Children’s, founded the First Gift initiative in partnership with members of the Red Lake Nation of Ojibwe and Minneapolis contemporary American Indian fine art gallery, All My Relations Arts. The program makes moccasins for American Indian babies in the special care nursery and neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s. Approximately 50 babies receive moccasins at Children’s Minnesota yearly since the project’s start in 2015.
