Dr. Gigi Chawla talks importance of immunizations

Dr. Gigi Chawla, chief of general pediatrics at Children’s Minnesota, talked about immunizations on the weekly WCCO Mid-Morning Show’s Ask a Pediatrician segment. She emphasized the importance of herd immunity, or the concept that if enough people in the community are vaccinated, then a virus or illness can’t spread. When herd immunity doesn’t exist, diseases like measles can spread quickly and cause outbreaks, much like what is happening in New York this spring and what Minnesota experienced in 2017 with 75 cases of the illness.
