WCCO and Children’s infection preventionist talk measles

Measles is a highly contagious virus that will make 9 out of 10 people who aren’t protected against it sick. This disease is easily transmittable as it can be transferred by an infected person through coughing, sneezing or simply breathing into the air.

Joe Kurland, infection preventionist from Children’s Minnesota, discussed the measles, tips to manage the disease and the importance of the MMR vaccine on WCCO.

In Minnesota, the risk of a measles outbreak is real, according to Kurland. “If we get below probably 95 percent of kids having the vaccine, we pose a risk for having disease transmission in our communities.”
