Our HealthySteps program is here to help you along your parenting journey
Raising a kid is a big job—especially in the first few years. Between sleepless nights, feedings and temper tantrums, parenthood is a real challenge—and it doesn’t come with a handbook.
“Babies experience the most incredible brain development during this time, which can be affected positively and negatively by the relationships and environment in which the baby is growing,” said Julie Erickson, PhD, LP Associate Clinical Director of Integrated behavioral Health at Children’s Minnesota.
While the first years are difficult, they’re also so important. Research shows that the early years of a child’s life set the tone for their future emotional, social and physical health and development. That’s why Children’s Minnesota is offering the HealthySteps program in Minneapolis.
“There is no time more important than the first three years of life, when babies form strong bonds to their caregivers that can benefit them throughout their lifetime,” Dr. Erickson explained.
What is HealthySteps?
HealthySteps is a national program that helps parents get the support they need during the early years of their child’s life. It promotes health, well-being and school readiness for babies and toddlers. Children’s Minnesota is one of the first pediatric practices in Minnesota to adopt HealthySteps, and we invite you to join us.
The program will connect you with a HealthySteps Specialist during your child’s well-child check-ups or between visits to talk with you about common concerns parents have, from feeding to behavior to sleep. They can also help with caregiver-child bonding, postpartum depression, and learning to adapt to a life with a baby or young child. Families may spend extra time with a HealthySteps Specialist while seeking routine care or in addition to care—it all depends on the family’s and the child’s individual needs.
What are the benefits of HealthySteps?
This is not a one-size-fits-all program. Our HealthySteps Specialist will spend time with you to address your family’s unique needs, whether through a one-time visit or as part of an ongoing relationship.
HealthySteps Specialists work with caregivers to help them focus on the following areas of development:
- Healthy brain development
- Teaching and supporting social and emotional skills
- Supporting language and literacy development starting from birth
A HealthySteps Specialist can also provide science-based guidance for caregivers about common problems such as sleep, tantrums, and how each child’s temperament can affect a child’s development, and how to best tailor their parenting approaches to their child’s needs.
