Children’s Minnesota Minneapolis campus re-verified as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (May 10, 2023) – Children’s Minnesota is pleased to announce that its Minneapolis hospital has been re-verified as a Level I pediatric trauma center by the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) Committee on Trauma. The organization’s Level I pediatric trauma center in Minneapolis is Minnesota’s only Level I pediatric trauma center in a hospital dedicated solely to kids.

“Re-verification as a Level I pediatric trauma center on the Minneapolis campus exemplifies the commitment of our kid experts to providing the best care possible to critically injured children who come into our hospital,” said Dr. Marc Gorelick, president and CEO of Children’s Minnesota. “We have the specialists, technology and facilities to ensure critically injured children receive the care they deserve 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

More than 750 children are admitted to the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses each year with traumatic injuries, and many hundreds more are cared for in the two hospitals’ emergency departments, which see over 90,000 visits annually. As the busiest pediatric trauma center in the region, Children’s Minnesota provides care for children of all ages with injuries ranging from fractures and concussions to life-threatening head and abdominal injuries.

The ACS Committee on Trauma verifies trauma centers based on specific requirements that must be met to ensure optimal institutional performance and trauma care capability. Each hospital undergoes a rigorous review by a team of experienced trauma site reviewers to determine whether these requirements are being met.
