Personal Biography

Dr. McNamara received his medical degree at the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York. Following completion of his residency, Dr. McNamara did his fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology at Boston Children's Hospital and at the Harvard School of Public Health. Subsequently, he served as a faculty member at the Harvard Medical School and directed the Pulmonary and Cystic Fibrosis Clinics and was co-director of the Bronchoscopy Program. Dr. McNamara is board-certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics in both General Pediatrics and Pediatric Pulmonology. He was also board certified in Hospice and Palliative Care Medicine, which is a rare certification for pediatricians. He has special interests in Quality Improvement in Medicine, Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma, chronic lung disease, recurrent pneumonia, congenital malformations of the lung and the care of children with life limiting conditions. Dr. McNamara has also served as vice chairman of the Board of Children's Health Network and was on the board of directors of Children's Minnesota for 4 years, 2 of those years as Chair of the Board Quality Committee. He also serves as president of Children's Respiratory and Critical Care Specialists. Dr. McNamara serves as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota and teaches medical students, residents and graduate physicians. He is a member of numerous medical staff committees at Children's Hospitals and clinics of Minnesota and is the Medical Director for Cystic Fibrosis, Home Care, Hospice and the Transitional Technology Supported programs. The CF Center was awarded a Quality Care award from the CF foundation 2009-2010 and 2016-2017. He has served on numerous committees for the American Thoracic Society and as physician representative to the Minnesota State Health Commissioner's Office Universal Standard Benefits Advisory Committee. Dr. McNamara also served on the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and has been awarded the 2011 "Angela Warner Friend of The CF Foundation Award" by the Minnesota Chapter of the CF foundation. He was awarded the Mitch Einzig Physician Teaching award in 2003, Board Quality Outstanding Achievement Award in 2003 and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Outstanding Care Center Partner in 2010. Dr. McNamara has co-authored over 25 scientific papers and review articles, numerous abstracts and national and international presentations and significantly contributed to 8 publications of large multicenter trials. He is currently the primary investigator for at least 14 open studies and has secured research funding from 48 separate grants. He has participated 2 large multicenter quality improvement projects coordinated by the Dartmouth Institute for Healthcare Quality Improvement involving Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes and a Coproduction of Care model for Care Delivery for patients with Cystic Fibrosis. He enjoys sailing, skiing, travel and Military History.
