Thalassemia Eye Care Resource List

Exjade can treat transfusional iron overload, but in some cases can sometimes cause damage to the eyes. Because of this, it is recommended all patients have ophthalmology testing before starting Exjade and then repeat this testing every year. In some cases, testing may be needed more frequently.

Ophthalmology exams are NOT the same as a standard eye exam performed by an optometrist. Ophthalmology exams should always be performed by someone who is specially trained in these types of exams. The exam should include evaluation of ocular disturbances including lens opacities, cataracts, elevations in intraocular pressure, and retinal disorders.  Your health care team has compiled a list of local ophthalmologists and recommends that you make annual appointments at the location nearest to you.
