More to Know
Many mouth wounds heal without stitches. However, seek immediate medical attention for bleeding that will not stop, gaping wounds, or wounds that cause severe pain and difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Keep in Mind
Deep, large, and dirty wounds need more care. (A "dirty" wound is one that germs have gotten into.) After a child receives medical attention for a gum wound, follow instructions carefully to prevent infection. Infections of mouth injuries are rare, but can happen.
