May also be called: Cut
An open wound of the head is a cut or break in the skin. The wound may be minor and near the surface of the scalp. Or it can be serious and deeper, affecting nerves, blood vessels, the brain, or bone.
The head has many blood vessels, so even minor wounds can look scary and bleed a lot.
Seek immediate medical attention if a wound is more than an inch long or appears to be deep. Doctors may need to close the wound with staples or stitches.
Deep, large, and dirty wounds need more care. (A "dirty" wound is one that germs have gotten into.) After a wound is treated and bandaged, follow instructions carefully to prevent infection and minimize scarring.
