May also be called: Cut

An open wound of the toe is a cut or break in the skin there. The wound may be minor and near the surface of the skin. Or it can be more serious, affecting deeper tissues of the toe, such as tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves, blood vessels, or bone.

More to Know

Treat minor wounds at home with first aid. Seek immediate medical attention if a wound appears to be deep, gaping, or won't stop bleeding. Doctors may try to close the wound with stitches or tape.

Keep in Mind

Deep, large, and dirty wounds need more care. (A "dirty" wound is one that germs have gotten into.) Because feet get dirty, wounds on the feet are more likely to get infected. After a child receives medical attention for a toe wound, follow instructions carefully to prevent infection and minimize scarring.
