Viral pneumonia is a lung infection caused by viruses such as influenza (flu), adenovirus, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Pneumonia caused by a virus is a common lung infection. Viral pneumonia spreads through mucus from coughing and sneezing. Symptoms can include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and wheezing.
Most cases of viral pneumonia improve on their own in 1-3 weeks; however, the cough and tiredness can sometimes last for weeks to months. Antibiotics can't treat viral pneumonia.
