Program description
The simulation center at Children’s Minnesota is proud to serve as a training ground for Children’s nationally recognized trauma, neonatal transport, surgical and cardiovascular care teams. We’re also committed to delivering high-quality simulation training for health care teams across the region with our mobile simulation center.
Our simulations cover everything from pediatric and neonatal stabilization procedures to teamwork and communication training and comforting distraught parents. Simulations target preparing new nurses and doctors for practice, and providing practicing experts with multiple opportunities to hone their teamwork and communication skills.
Course and service options
Each year Children’s simulation center supports hundreds of simulations. Core courses are customized for hands-on learning for your unit or department and include:
Pediatric simulation training
Putting PALS, trauma courses, and crisis resource management into practice. This course creates realistic, dynamic, pediatric emergency situations that require health care personnel to apply their knowledge of PALS or other standardized guidelines and utilize technical, clinical decision-making and behavioral skills in their response as a team. This course can cover a spectrum from early recognition of a child’s deteriorating condition to resuscitation team training.
Neonatal simulation training
Putting NRP, S.T.A.B.L.E. and crisis resource management into practice. This course creates realistic, dynamic, neonatal emergency situations that require health care personnel to apply their knowledge of NRP and S.T.A.B.L.E. guidelines, while utilizing technical, clinical decision-making and behavioral skills in their response as a team.
Transport of the critically ill neonate
This course includes technical skill practice and repeated simulations targeted at safe transport of the critically ill infant.
Simulation instructor and debriefing training
This two-day course is designed to develop instructors for simulation-based education. Participants will be introduced to the principles of adult learning, crisis resource management, scenario and course development, and the art and science of debriefing. The course is interactive and hands-on and allows opportunities to practice and apply material learned, including a collaboratively arranged additional half-day practicum where participants facilitate as lead debriefer and Children’s Simulation Center instructors provide expert feedback to support the delivery of constructive, objective and concise debriefings.

Competency-based training and evaluation
Integrate simulation methods into individual or group performance training and evaluation needs to meet organizational or regulatory standards or address risk problems. We can assist in building a training that is right for you. Task trainers such as infant lumbar puncture trainers, pediatric and neonatal airway trainers, IV/IO limbs and full body manikins are available.
Institutional policy implementation
Make policy development more efficient by using simulation to test policies prior to implementation.
Test of new spaces, processes and equipment
