Clinical learning

Special COVID-19 Statement: Due to constraints around learners coming on-site at Children’s Minnesota, all rotations for students are subject to review and approval from hospital leadership. Rotations are permitted on a case-by-case basis and limited by provision of PPE, staffing and supervision, and the ability of a given department to provide a safe experience given social distance requirements. Given the volumes of students enrolled at both our hospital sites through the rest of this year, we cannot accept requests for away rotations at this time. Our commitment to the safety and well-being of staff and learners is our priority as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, supply shortages and hospital staffing changes. We recognize that this is disruptive to students’ education and remain a committed partner in educating the next generation of pediatric clinicians and caregivers. We thank you for your understanding and continued partnership through these uncertain times.

Obtaining a clinical rotation

If you are interested in clinical learning through Children’s Minnesota and are not a student at a contracted educational institution, you must identify and secure a Children’s professional staff member who is available to act as your preceptor. This person must contact the appropriate education office to verify their commitment to precept and discuss the details of your rotation.

Non-clinical learning in graduate medical education

There are limited non-clinical rotations (also known as observerships and/or shadowing experiences) at Children’s Minnesota. A non-clinical rotation is a learning experience where medical students, fellows and residents are allowed to observe clinical activities performed by a Children’s professional staff member with no hands-on contact with patients. This experience takes place over a concentrated period of time and must have a specific sponsor who is a member of the professional staff. The education offices at Children’s Minnesota cannot match you with a sponsor nor provide contact information beyond what is available publicly in our Find a Doctor database.

Arranging a non-clinical rotation

To secure an observership through the Graduate Medical Education (GME) office, you must:

  • Be at the medical student level of training or higher
  • Find a member of Children’s professional staff to be your preceptor (sponsor)
  • Schedule your own observership dates with your preceptor and notify Graduate Medical Education of the proposed dates
  • Contact the appropriate education office at least two weeks before the start of your non-clinical rotation to:
    • Confirm name and contact information for your preceptor
    • Request the link for online enrollment
    • Confirm the dates and times you will be observing

Please contact an education coordinator for more information or with any questions.
