New HIKO/STEC Order Sets

New HIKO/STEC Order Sets are available as part of the research project Hyperhydration to Improve Kidney Outcomes in Children with Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli Infection (HIKO/STEC).

Children’s Minnesota is participating in a study on hyperhydration to reduce the incidence of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). This study protocol will test the hypothesis that intravenous fluid therapy (i.e. hyperhydration) in the pre and early HUS interval reduces the microangiopathic and ischemic renal injuries that lead to morbidity and mortality in STEC-infected children. Children’s Minnesota was assigned to conservative fluid management for September 2022 – September 2024.

New HIKO/STEC Order Sets available:

  • ED HIKO STEC Conservative Fluid Management
  • Pediatric HIKO STEC Conservative Fluid Management

Note: These order sets are only to be used for study participants. ED and Hospitalist Providers will be contacted by the ED research assistant about the study prior to the need for the use of the order set(s).

ED and Hospitalist departments will have area specific training from Dr. Bergmann and Dr. Brunsburg prior to the start of the study.

Effective September 7, 2022
