Gender Inclusive Care

Everyone should be called by the right name and pronouns. To provide a safe and inclusive care experience for all our patients, including our gender diverse patients, Children’s Minnesota is improving the way we capture and display the patient’s chosen name and pronouns in our Cerner EHR and printed patient care documents. These improvements eliminate the emotional harm caused when we use a patient’s former name, or birth name, and incorrect pronouns.

The following changes assist with this initiative:

  • A new registration field to document patients’ pronouns
  • A new registration field to document name pronunciations
  • The Admin Sex field in registration renamed to Legal Sex
  • Birth Sex is now a required field:
    • The patient/family should always be asked for the Birth Sex. If the family is not available, staff should document the Legal Sex in the Birth Sex field to satisfy the requirement.

Note: Birth Sex will not be required in the following situations:

      • PM conversations that currently do not list the Sex fields
      • Encounter Update PM conversations where billing staff would not have the patient or family available to answer this question.
  • Updated Banner Bar and Clinical Highlights to display the new Pronouns and Name Pronunciation fields.

Scheduling/Registration staff: Review the current Preferred Name field and update if needed. Only the preferred first name should be documented in the Preferred First Name field.
