Symbolic and performative gestures are no longer acceptable when it comes to Black maternal health disparities. In Minnesota the statistics are startling. In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, Brittany L. Wright and State Rep. Ruth Richardson share what’s behind the disparities and how we can all replace symbolic and performative gestures with meaningful and transformative actions. It is these actions that will lead to systemic change and racial equity in Black Maternal health.

March 31 marks International Transgender Day of Visibility, a day started in 2009 to celebrate the transgender community. In particular, the transgender and gender diverse people who have the courage, safety and agency to express their identities openly and visibly in their public and private lives.

In 2022, Children’s Minnesota celebrated the 10th anniversary of our partnership. Children’s Minnesota was one of the first two Project SEARCH programs in Minnesota.

Every day that I'm in the Children’s Minnesota Gender Health clinic, I hear from patients and families who wonder if they will have to flee our state in order to continue to love and support their transgender child. That’s why I have been to the Minnesota State Capitol several times the past two months fighting to protect and support transgender and gender diverse youth.

Historically, Black patients have experienced disparities across the spectrum of health care, even when it comes to the most basic of patient needs – hair care. That’s why a team of nurses at Children’s Minnesota set out to address the issue and improve hair care for children in the hospital with textured hair.
