Primary Medical and Surgical Units
The Children’s Minnesota system has four primary medical and surgical units.
Children’s – St. Paul: 5th Floor Neuroscience Unit
This 26-bed unit provides care to infants, children, and young adults as inpatients in the following specialties:
- Suspected child abuse and neglect
- Transitional acute behavioral health
- The nursing staff works closely with the pediatricians and specialists to provide the needed cares, education and support that go along with each of these diagnoses.
The unit is home to Children’s epilepsy program, specializing in the care of children and their families affected by seizures and epilepsy. We use a multidisciplinary approach that includes the pain management team, integrative therapy and child life.
Children’s – St. Paul: 6th Floor Medical/Surgical Inpatient Unit
The 6th floor medical/surgical unit in St. Paul provides care to inpatient and short stay patients with medical and surgical needs, specializing in urology, cardiology and diabetes. Our staff is trained in the care of the child from infancy through adolescence.
All nurses in this unit have received specialized education for the diabetic population. Children and families come to our unit from all over the metropolitan area and outlying communities with a new diagnosis of diabetes. We work in collaboration with the McNeely Diabetes Center to provide education to patients and families.
Children’s – Minneapolis: 6th Floor Inpatient Medical/Surgical Unit
The 6th floor is a 33-bed medical/surgical unit. Our specialties are the care of pediatric patients with eating disorders, cystic fibrosis, medical and surgical neurology, secondary diabetes and urology diseases. We also care for a wide range of patients with respiratory, digestive and ENT diseases.
6th Floor has a unique approach to care delivery that we call TEAM CARE (Together Everyone Accomplishes the Most Communication, Accountability, Respect, Encouragement). One of the main features of TEAM CARE is that our nurses are able to choose their own assignments, which provides greater continuity of care for our patients and a greater sense of autonomy for our nurses.
Children’s – Minneapolis: 7th Floor Inpatient Medical/Surgical Unit and Hematology/Oncology Unit
This 33-bed unit provides care to infants, children and young adults as inpatients in the following areas:
- Behavioral Health
Children’s Minneapolis 7th floor is a local and regional referral center for oncology and hematology diagnosis focusing on all types of malignancies, including solid tumors and leukemia and blood disorders such as coagulation abnormalities and anemia. The 7th floor also focuses on the care of children with orthopedic and transitional acute behavioral health needs.
We use a multidisciplinary approach that includes the pain management team, integrative therapy and child life. The nursing staff works closely with the pediatricians and specialists to provide the needed cares, education and support that go along with each of these diagnoses. Diagnostic testing, physical assessment, administration of chemotherapy, and symptom and pain management are all provided.
