First-of-its-kind medication management system increases patient safety and streamlines IV medication management
Minneapolis, Minn. – (May 8, 2013) – Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota announced it has successfully implemented a new automated system which is significantly reducing medication errors by wirelessly transmitting data between patients' infusion pumps and electronic medical records (EMR).
Children's partnered with medical technology company, CareFusion Corp., and EMR provider, Cerner, to create the new wireless system. Now, when a nurse scans barcodes on patients' wristbands, medications, and infusion pumps, this closed-loop medication administration system wirelessly transmits doctors' medication orders from patients' EMRs directly to their smart pump to pre-program infusions. Then, after a patient's nurse reviews and confirms the smart pump programming, medication is delivered intravenously to the patient.

Minneapolis campus update
- Published on Thursday, 25 April 2013 13:40
Earlier this morning there was a fire at the Chicago Deli, a business that neighbors our Minneapolis campus. There was no damage to our facilities and, most importantly, no Children's patients, families or staff were harmed. The smoke did impact our facilities closest to the Chicago Deli. Infection prevention and environmental services are working together to monitor air quality and clean and assess rooms and equipment affected by smoke and residue.
All areas of the Minneapolis hospital and Emergency Department are open, with the exception of elective surgery and radiology which have been postponed or redirected for the day. Areas within Children's Specialty Center will begin to re-open as air quality improves and as equipment and supplies are evaluated. Here is a current status of what areas are open.
