Neonatal Research Program
Children’s Minnesota is a leader in treating newborn babies who need medical care. But we don’t just care for our patients—we also study how to make our treatments better.
We perform our own research right here at Children’s, and we publish the results so the whole medical community can benefit. We have been advancing neonatal research and respiratory knowledge since the 1970s.
We perform safe clinical trials to see how much better new treatments can be. Some important innovations that were first tested here have become standard treatments in neonatal care.
We also work together with other top hospitals and universities to perform large collaborative studies. Our current projects involve many of the world’s leading research institutions and networks, including the PENUT Trial Consortium, the Erythropoietin Neuroprotection Trial Consortium, the TOLSURF Study Group, and the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Consortium.

Neonatal Research staff
Scientific Director: Andrea Lampland, MD
Andrea Lampland, MD, is the Neonatal Research Director at Children’s Minnesota. She is an assistant professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at the University of Minnesota and the Associate Program Director of the Neonatal Perinatal Fellowship program. She is the neonatal director of the Midwest Fetal Care Center. After attending medical school at the University of Minnesota, she completed her pediatric residency training at both Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago and the University of Minnesota. Andrea completed her Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship at the University of Minnesota in 2007 and subsequently joined the staff of Children’s Minnesota. She is board certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Her areas of interest include clinical and laboratory research of neonatal ventilation strategies, the care of extremely preterm infants, neonatal transport, and resident/fellow education. Andrea’s research has been published in the Journal of Pediatrics, Pediatric Research, Pediatric Pulmonology, Archives of Disease in Childhood – Neonatal Edition and Critical Care Medicine. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three sons.
Medical Director: Thomas George, MD
Thomas George, MD is System Medical Director for Neonatology. He earned his MD degree at Indiana University and completed his pediatric residency and neonatal-perinatal fellowship at the University of Iowa Childrens Hospital. His clinical interests have included the care of the extremely premature infant and the role of inhaled nitric oxide in premature infants; he also has interests in educational research, faculty development and determining trainee competency. He plays roles in education at the resident and subspecialty fellow level, in administration/neonatal program development and in outreach and neonatal CME activities.
Clinical Research Manager: Ernest Krause
Ernest Krause is the Neonatal Research Manager. He earned his MBA from the University of Minnesota, he has a CCRP from the Society of Clinical Research Associates, Inc., and 12 years of clinical research experience. He has a passion for leading clinical trials, big data sets, and Excel spreadsheets. Ernie is a lifelong soccer player and loves to hike, bike, and travel with his wife and two sons.
