Palliative Care & Hospice Program
Palliative care: Helping kids live as well as possible
At Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, the palliative care team helps children and their families facing life-threatening illness.
The team delivers palliative care for children with serious illness to make sure they have the best management for pain and distressing symptoms. When their pain and symptoms are well controlled, their quality of life improves.
In the United States the vast majority of infants, children and teenagers with advanced illnesses who are near the end of life do not have access to interdisciplinary pediatric palliative care services either in their community or at the nearest children’s hospital. But at Children’s, we have one of the only and one of the largest pediatric palliative care programs in the U.S.
We see patients in both of our hospitals and in our new Kiran Stordalen and Horst Rechelbacher Pediatric Pain, Palliative and Integrative Medicine Clinic. Learn more about the clinic.
Standing by your side
Children receive palliative care when they have a serious disease and there’s a chance they may not reach adulthood. If your child is referred to our palliative care program, it doesn’t necessarily mean he or she is nearing the end of life. Many patients receive palliative care and curative treatment at the same time.
Our staff is specifically trained to manage distressing symptoms. Whether receiving palliative care or hospice care, we work with your child to ensure they have good pain control. We also work to minimize symptoms such as nausea, fatigue and breathlessness. Kids who feel better live longer, giving your family the opportunity to make the most out of every day you have together.
Hospice care: Celebrating more good days
For children whose physicians are concerned they may not live beyond the next six months, Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota also delivers hospice care, a division of palliative care. We’re the only pediatric hospice program in the state of Minnesota, and we’re the only hospice program that sees patients in the hospital, in the clinic and in their homes. For the children who may be at end of life, we carry the hope that they are as comfortable and as pain-free as possible for as long as they are with us.
