2023 Annual Report

Children's Minnesota | The Kid Experts | 2024 Annual Report

A message from our CEO

2024 was a monumental year at Children’s Minnesota: We celebrated a century of caring for kids.

From the 16-bed hospital we opened in St. Paul in 1924, we’ve become one of the largest and best independent pediatric health systems in the country. We now serve more than 165,000 patients a year, combining cutting-edge care with compassionate support.

We got here by never faltering on our mission: championing the health needs of children and families. With the incredible work and support of our staff, volunteers, donors and community at large, we helped tens of thousands of kids live healthier lives in 2024 — kids from every county in Minnesota and every state in the Upper Midwest.

In 2024, we:

  • Combined expert care with innovative technology to help children beat challenging conditions, as you’ll see in the patient stories below.
  • Put kids first with our compassionate, child-designed “wrap-around” services, which include art, play and music therapy.
  • Ventured outside our clinics and hospitals to champion kids’ needs at the state legislature and partner with communities to address health disparities, so all kids have excellent care.
  • Remained a nonprofit health system where no child is turned away, regardless of ability to pay.

We accomplished all of this and so much more, despite a difficult labor and financial environment which led to an operating loss in 2024. Our responsible fiscal stewardship allowed us to weather the shortfall and forecast a positive outlook for 2025.

We proudly celebrated our centennial in 2024, but we didn’t just look back. We unveiled a new 10-year aspiration where Children’s Minnesota is the region’s premier provider of specialized pediatric care, creating exceptional experiences for patients and families, our staff and the broader community.

We will achieve this by remaining an independent pediatric health system, always prioritizing the unique needs of children. We will achieve this because we know big things are possible. From a tiny 16-bed hospital, our staff, volunteers, donors and community have built Children’s Minnesota into an essential resource for children and families throughout the Upper Midwest.

It’s impossible not to be moved by the incredible impact we’ve made — together — during the past century. It’s impossible not to be excited for the next century of helping kids live their best lives.

Advancing pediatric care

“Must-have” technology for Annabelle

Neurosurgery

It was by chance that Annabelle and her family learned she had a grape-size tumor in her brain. She had volunteered for a brain development study when the tumor showed up in an MRI. Shortly after, Annabelle was diagnosed with a low-grade glioma and underwent a successful 11-hour surgery in the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) surgical suite. The Children’s Minnesota iMRI suite is the first of its kind in North America. It allows our neurosurgery team to perform mid-procedure scans to ensure complete tumor removal.

“Having iMRI was one of the ‘must haves’ for me when selecting the hospital for my child’s surgery,” said Annabelle’s mom Jozy.

Bennett: “Our miracle baby”

Cardiology, neonatology

Bennett was 2 weeks old when he faced a life-threatening condition. After being rushed from his home in Deer River, Minnesota, to Duluth and then to Minneapolis, Bennett was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. The collaborative efforts of transport, cardiovascular and neonatal specialists at St. Mary’s Hospital and Children’s Minnesota saved Bennett’s life. Bennett takes medication to manage his condition and requires ongoing monitoring and care.

“He’s our miracle baby,” said Brookelyn, Bennett’s mom. “I am just truly grateful for both St. Mary’s in Duluth and Children’s (Minnesota) for saving our little boy’s life.”

Valerie’s care: cutting-edge and compassionate

Cancer and blood disorders

Valerie was 4 years old when she was diagnosed with a high-risk neuroblastoma. With support from her family and the kid experts at Children’s Minnesota, Valerie underwent intensive treatments, including state-of-the-art chemotherapy, surgery, stem cell transplants and cutting-edge immunotherapy. Today, her cancer is stable, allowing Valerie to continue finding joy in singing and dancing, especially during music therapy sessions at Children’s Minnesota. Valerie has even been inspired by one of her care team members, Teresa Herriage, to help children like herself someday.

“Valerie has told me when she grows up, she wants to be like Teresa and help kids with cancer,” said Gay, Valerie’s mom.

Heart warrior Colton battles rare condition

Cardiology

Colton was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) before birth. Thanks to advanced pediatric cardiovascular care from Children’s Minnesota and Mayo Clinic, Colton underwent successful surgeries, including the Norwood and Glenn procedures. Despite complications, Colton received immediate and ongoing expert care, allowing him to go home after 103 days in the hospital. Children’s Minnesota continued to support Colton through multiple medical issues, significantly improving his quality of life.

The common care plan for babies born with HLHS is a series of three surgeries to reconstruct the heart to make up for the defects – a series of procedures Children’s Minnesota helped pioneer in 1985.

Award-winning pediatric care

In 2024, Children’s Minnesota received many honors for our outstanding service to children and families. Newsweek proclaimed us one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals for oncology and hematology, while Forbes and Becker’s Hospital Review named us a top place to work in health care.

U.S. News & World Report recognized Children’s Minnesota as a best children’s hospital in two specialties: our cardiology and heart surgery collaboration with Mayo Clinic and our joint nephrology program with M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital.

U.S. News & World Report also named The Mother Baby Center locations in St. Paul and Coon Rapids, a partnership between Allina Health and Children’s Minnesota, among the best maternity hospitals. The Mother Baby Center in St. Paul was also recognized by U.S. News and World Report for its excellent outcomes for Black patients.

The Human Rights Campaign re-designated Children’s Minnesota as an “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader,” the Minnesota National Guard proclaimed Children’s Minnesota a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon organization for our efforts to support the military community, and Mpls.St.Paul Magazine named more than 170 Children’s Minnesota physicians “Top Doctors” and more than 60 physicians “Rising Stars.”

Stories of care and courage

Temi

Cardiovascular

When Temi was 4 years old, our Minneapolis hospital became her home for 465 days. She was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and had to be hooked up to a heart pump while she waited for a new heart. The cardiovascular and child life teams provided incredible support to Temi, helping her to continue to grow, learn and thrive. In June 2024, Temi received a new heart. Temi’s resilience and the extraordinary care she received helped her make an amazing recovery. Temi was finally able to go home a week after surgery.

“I would like to say thank you…,” said Temi’s dad Abi. “We parents, we can’t do it alone.”

Watch Temi’s story on KARE 11

Gavin

Cancer and blood disorders

Gavin was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 6 years old, leading to two years of treatments and hospital visits. Despite these challenges, the expert medical and kid-centered care at Children’s Minnesota left lasting memories. Gavin’s child life specialist made medical procedures less daunting, using relatable methods like an Iron Man toy to show Gavin how a port would be implanted. Gavin is now an active 9-year-old who enjoys mountain biking, baking and playing with family and friends.

“Gavin…has the best memories of his time at Children’s Minnesota,” his mom, Alicia, said. “Their care and treatment for kids is just so special.”

Read more of Gavin’s story.

Suhayla

Cancer and blood disorders

Suhayla’s experience with cancer treatment is a testament to her strength and the expert care provided by the cancer and blood disorders team at Children’s Minnesota. Diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma when Suhayla was 18 years old, one of her first thoughts was, “What are we going to do about it?” In the weeks between her diagnosis and the start of treatment, Suhayla graduated from high school and continued to work. When Suhayla finished radiation therapy in 2024, there was no evidence of cancer. Her mom, Deeqa, encourages families to be active advocates for their child’s care while trusting in the expertise of their care team.

Eli

Neonatal intensive care unit

Eli weighed less than 2 pounds when he was born and spent 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Minnesota. He faced numerous health challenges throughout his life including heart surgery, pneumonia and asthma. Despite these obstacles, years later Eli was able to complete a 2,200-mile, six-month hike on the Appalachian Trail. What’s next for Eli? Hiking the Continental Divide Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, to earn the ‘triple crown’ of hiking.

“We want the nurses and doctors that helped Eli 21 years ago to know that if it was not for all of their wise care and dedicated concern, he would not have been able to add this adventure to his list of life accomplishments,” said Eli’s mom Kathy.

Securian Financial Foundation strengthens mental health program for youth

Because mental health issues affect the child as well as their family, the Securian Financial Foundation’s support of our mental health program empowers families throughout our community.

Securian’s leadership gift of $1 million to the inpatient mental health program at the Children’s Minnesota hospital in St. Paul serves kids and teens with the most urgent needs. The unit has 22 private rooms designed for a parent or other caregiver to stay overnight with their child, providing a supportive experience for the child and parent.

The program is equipped to meet kids’ physical and mental health needs, with robust resources for young people who have both a mental health crisis and active medical needs.

“We know the mental health challenges of kids in our community are greater than ever before,” said Ann McGarry, chief marketing officer at Securian and a member of the Children’s Minnesota Foundation Board of Directors. “Securian is committed to ensuring these young people get the help they need.”

The quiet power of lasting impact

Robert Jones never sought recognition, but his thoughtful generosity will echo for generations at Children’s Minnesota. In 2001, Robert and his family established an endowment in memory of his sister, Meredith—a gift that for more than two decades has provided comfort and support to grieving families through our bereavement program.

His final act of kindness came through a trusted friendship. Before passing away in 2022, Robert entrusted his attorney and lifelong confidant, Joe Lawver, with fulfilling his philanthropic vision. Stewarding Robert’s legacy through the Minneapolis Foundation, Joe facilitated a $3 million unrestricted grant to Children’s Minnesota—a testament to his friend’s quiet confidence in our mission and belief in healthier futures for all children.

Two gifts. One legacy. Together, they embody the profound ripple effect of a life lived with purpose—where trusted relationships amplify impact, and kindness outlasts a single lifetime.

Minnesota Twins + Pablo López = a win for Children’s Minnesota

Minnesota Twins pitcher Pablo López grew up in Venezuela, where both of his late parents were doctors. They instilled in him a passion for service to others and a strong respect for the medical profession. When Pablo was traded to Minnesota, one of the first things he did was connect with local organizations that align with his values, including Children’s Minnesota.

Proceeds from the Twins’ special “Pablo Day” ticket package during the 2024 season benefited Children’s Minnesota and ensured that kids continue to receive essential wrap-around services that never appear on a patient’s bill. Wrap-around services are designed to care for the whole family and include child life, music therapy, pet therapy, sibling play areas, interpreter services and much more.

When Pablo makes his rounds at the hospital, he is popular with patients and families alike. When he greets them in his native Spanish, he brings a smile to the faces of Spanish-speaking families.

Family’s cancer experience inspires giving

After 845 days of treatment and 12 hospital stays for their son Levi, Amy and Corey Franklin knew they wanted to help other families facing childhood cancer. Their first online fundraising campaign raised nearly $42,000, thanks to support from friends, family and colleagues. During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September 2024, their second fundraising campaign as part of Shine Bright for Kids brought their total to an incredible $89,000.

The Franklins are now on track to surpass $100,000 by the end of 2025. “We’ve been surrounded with such love and support, and we wanted to extend that to other cancer families,” Amy said. The family’s experience with Levi’s care during his leukemia treatment inspired them to give back, ensuring other families receive the same expert care and compassion they did.
