A message from our CEO
2025 marked a new chapter for Children’s Minnesota. After the retirement of Marc Gorelick, MD, in August, I was incredibly honored to step into the role of president and CEO. Children’s Minnesota has been my professional home for two decades now, and I care deeply about our team, our mission and the children we serve.
Leadership changes naturally bring questions, so I want to assure you that our mission remains as strong as ever. Our dedication to improving children’s health is at the heart of everything we do. Our staff, volunteers, donors and broader community work tirelessly to ensure children receive care grounded in empathy and expertise. The stories in this report highlight their remarkable commitment and compassion.
While our values haven’t changed, we are energized by ambitious goals for the future. Standing on a strong foundation, we are poised to grow as an independent, innovative and resilient leader in pediatric care, ready to meet the evolving needs of our community.
Even amid a challenging economic climate for health care systems across the Twin Cities, we achieved a positive operating margin in 2025 and maintained our strong AA credit rating. We also kicked our technology and process overhauls into high gear in 2025 by starting our transition to a new electronic health record. It is a massive undertaking, but it will ultimately transform the way we function, making it easier for families to access care and for our staff to do their daily work.
The essential role we play in our community became especially clear during some very difficult moments in August 2025. When seven young victims of the Annunciation school shooting arrived at our Minneapolis hospital, our Level 1 pediatric trauma center responded with exceptional skill and compassion. Our responsibility didn’t end there. Our kid experts spoke out in the media and at the Minnesota State Capitol, urging lawmakers to address gun violence as the public health crisis it is.
I am profoundly grateful for the privilege of leading this extraordinary organization. As you read this report, I hope you’ll see that Children’s Minnesota is more than a health system. We are a trusted partner and fierce advocate for kids, working alongside families and our community to build a future where every child thrives.

Advancing pediatric care
Quintuplet Bilal beats incredible odds
Neonatology
Bilal weighed just 8 ounces when he was born 17 weeks early. As the smallest known surviving infant in the U.S., Bilal spent one year in the Children’s Minnesota neonatal intensive care unit. He and his four quintuplet siblings had a 10% chance of survival but overcame incredible odds thanks to their expert care teams.
All five siblings are expected to develop normally and will be monitored closely for years to come. Children’s Minnesota provided lifesaving care and compassionate support, earning heartfelt gratitude from Bilal’s family and advancing pediatric medicine for the most vulnerable patients.
Giorgio’s cancer comeback
Cancer and blood disorders, rehabilitation
At age 4, Giorgio faced a rare, aggressive brain tumor. Right after surgery at Children’s Minnesota, Giorgio began working with a dedicated rehab team: physical, occupational and speech therapists who supported his recovery through every step, adapting to his needs and motivating him daily. The seamless collaboration among his care team ensured Giorgio regained his health, strength and joy. Cardiovascular
Lucy was born with serious congenital heart defects and required open-heart surgery at Children’s Minnesota just days after her birth. When her aorta began to narrow again, Lucy became the first baby in Minnesota to receive the Minima heart stent, a device specifically designed for infants that can expand as she grows.
The procedure, also performed at Children’s Minnesota, was a success. Lucy’s experience highlights her medical team’s dedication to using the latest advancements in care for even their youngest patients. Today, Lucy is healthy and continues to inspire hope.
“Lucy is our little trailblazer, setting the course for other babies. The stent has worked great,” said Lucy’s mother Heidi.
New tool transforms Luna’s care
Ear, nose and throat
When Stephanie and Nick learned their daughter Luna would be born with a cleft lip, they found reassurance and expert guidance at Children’s Minnesota.
Their care team, led by Brianne Roby, MD, developed a personalized treatment plan using a cutting-edge presurgical method called PLANA, which made care more comfortable for Luna and manageable for her family. After her successful surgery, Luna quickly returned home and began healing well.
“In the beginning, it’s overwhelming with all the unknowns, but just know that you are not alone,” Stephanie said. “The care team is there to guide you every step of the way.”
Award-winning pediatric care
Children’s Minnesota continues to set the standard for excellence in pediatric health care, earning numerous prestigious recognitions in 2025.
Our collaborative programs received national acclaim: U.S. News & World Report ranked The Mayo Clinic – Children’s Minnesota Cardiovascular Collaborative No. 30 in Pediatric Cardiology & Heart Surgery, and our joint nephrology program with M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital earned the No. 21 spot.
U.S. News & World Report recognized the Mercy Hospital location of The Mother Baby Center, a partnership between Allina Health and Children’s Minnesota, as a “Maternity Care Access Hospital” for its commitment to underserved communities.
Becker’s Healthcare recognized Children’s Minnesota for its exceptional cardiovascular care and named us one of the top places to work in health care for the third consecutive year.
Finally, we congratulate the 196 Children’s Minnesota physicians recognized as Top Doctors by Minnesota Monthly, as well as the 170 named “Top Doctors” and the 68 named “Rising Stars” by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine.
Stories of care and courage
From Iraq to Minnesota: Alex’s brave move for better health
Cancer and blood disorders
Alex was 10 when he and his family moved from Iraq to Minnesota to find Alex the best care. Alex has beta thalassemia, a disorder in which red blood cells don’t receive enough oxygen to support tissues and organs in the body. At Children’s Minnesota, Alex and his family found more than just doctors – they found a team dedicated to helping Alex thrive.
Alex, now a teenager, is doing great. He loves school, video games and soccer.
“I wouldn’t be here without you,” Alex says of his care team. “You’re the reason … I believe I can be healthy and strong.”
Jariah and the power of positivity
Cancer and blood disorders
Jariah is a talented young person with a passion for music and school. She was also diagnosed with sickle cell disease shortly after she was born. Jariah has faced more than her share of hospital visits and surgeries, yet she manages to stay upbeat and never lets her disease define her.
Jariah wants to be a pediatrician one day to help kids like herself.
Throughout it all, Children’s Minnesota has not only provided Jariah expert medical care but also emotional support and special moments like meeting her favorite Vikings player.
“I don’t want to go anywhere else but Children’s Minnesota,” said Jariah’s mom, Rae. “They are so helpful and warm.”
Landon: seizure free after life-changing surgery
Neurosciences
At age 3, Landon began experiencing severe seizures, which affected his speech and daily life. He was diagnosed with cortical dysplasia at Children’s Minnesota, yet he overcame countless challenges, never letting epilepsy stop him from playing sports.
After years of medication and support from his family and care team, Landon underwent successful epilepsy surgery. The procedure took place in the state-of-the-art interoperative MRI suite at Children’s Minnesota, allowing doctors to confirm the removal of all cortical dysplasia tissue in Landon’s brain. Landon has been seizure-free ever since.
“Watching [Landon] persevere is amazing,” his dad, Dan, said. “His grace and lack of fear is astounding.”
Sydney’s lifesaving surgery
Neurosciences
When 2-year-old Sydney suddenly became unresponsive after what seemed like a simple cold, her parents rushed her to Children’s Minnesota. Doctors discovered she was suffering from an exceptionally rare brain condition. The neurosurgery team sprang into action, performing two emergency brain surgeries that saved Sydney’s life.
Sydney lost some basic abilities, but after months of tough rehabilitation she is once again walking, talking, running and trying to keep up with her two big sisters.
“How incredibly talented and collaborative the team was at Children’s [Minnesota] … it consistently exceeded our expectations,” said Sydney’s mom, Britta. “The one thing that struck us the most was all of the different areas of deep expertise and how they really came together.”

APi Group strengthens children’s mental health care through action and investment
When a child is in a mental health crisis, timely, specialized care can make an enormous difference for the entire family.
With a $1 million gift to the Children’s Minnesota mental health program, the APi Group Foundation is strengthening emergency, outpatient and inpatient services, as well as supporting the team that delivers this coordinated, compassionate care.
This gift helps ensure that when a child arrives for mental health care, they are met with the right expertise, the right environment and a coordinated plan of care, reducing fear and improving safety, which moves children and families toward healing faster.
APi Group’s impact goes beyond funding, with team members also volunteering to assemble care kits and write thank you notes to mental health staff.
Through both philanthropy and team member involvement, APi Group is strengthening mental health care for young people and helping Children’s Minnesota meet families where they are.
Freddie’s legacy of love
Freddie Solum’s family is committed to ensuring that the qualities that defined him continue to make a difference at Children’s Minnesota. Freddie, who passed away after facing cancer with remarkable courage, paid careful attention to how those around him were feeling.
“He was compassionate and empathetic and put others before himself,” remembers his mom, Lauren.
To carry that spirit forward, Freddie’s family established a fund at The Minneapolis Foundation in his name. The fund supports Children’s Minnesota programs central to Freddie’s care, including cancer and blood disorders, and pain, palliative care and integrative medicine. The fund also supports music therapy, physical therapy and child life, services that brought Freddie meaningful moments of comfort.
Freddie’s family says their commitment is rooted in love rather than loss. Their generosity ensures Freddie will be known for what mattered most to him – helping others.
Spreading gratitude: a family tradition
Bryan and Agnes Koehn are grateful that their children’s care at Children’s Minnesota never involved serious illness. That gratitude inspired a family tradition focused on giving back to families facing greater challenges.
More than a decade ago, their daughter Mackenzy, then just 4, helped shop for toys for a children’s hospital. When the family returned to St. Paul, she asked to do the same for Children’s Minnesota. “How do you say no to that?” Agnes said.
What began as six bags of toys has grown into an annual, family-led effort supporting the Children’s Minnesota Holiday Joy Drop. The Koehns rallied friends, classmates, teams and clients to contribute more than $20,000 in toys in December 2025 alone.
Today, Mackenzy continues to lead the effort, inspiring her siblings, Eleanor and Joseph, along with others, to share joy and gratitude with young patients and their families at Children’s Minnesota.
