A message to the people of Kansas City

Our hearts are hurting for the people of Kansas City. We offer our deepest condolences to everyone affected by the horrific shooting during the celebration parade. A mother lost her life. Many others were wounded, including 11 children. They and many more will be haunted by this experience for the rest of their lives.

Our hearts are also with our colleagues at Children’s Mercy hospital, who had a front row seat to the terrible impact gun violence has on kids. The care and compassion they are giving these young victims and their families, who simply wanted to cheer on their champions, serves as a bright light during a dark time.

We must do better for all our people, but especially our children. We must take action to keep them safe from gun violence. We will continue fighting for that. But right now, we want the people of Kansas City to know they are in our hearts, and they are not alone.
