Red-Vested Rockstar: Rui Raposo

Children’s Volunteer Services presents: Red-Vested Rockstar!

Meet Rui!

 1.   Why he ROCKS?!

“I got involved at Children`s because I hope to become a pediatric nurse. Volunteering is the best way to gain experience, and give back to the community. I am originally from South Africa and been living in the U.S. for 3 years. I currently speak four languages and hope to learn more.”

 2.   Favorite thing to do outside of volunteering?

“When I am not at college, I travel as much as possible! I am looking forward to going to South Africa in June.”

 3.   Do you have any kids or pets of your own?

“I have a moody tabby cat that I adore. Salta is seven years old, and is obsessed with sleeping.”

 4.   If you could create a new candy bar, what would be in it and what would you name it?

“It would need to have the following layers:
A crunchy almond base, layers and layers of shredded coconuts, one layer of caramel, one layer of Peanut butter and finally,
COVERED IN CHOCOLATE…pure bliss! I would call it; ‘Eat this’!”

 5.   Share a favorite volunteer experience or story:

“When volunteering, I frequently speak Spanish with patients and families. Recently I had a play date with a patient who only spoke Spanish. Being a child in a hospital is overwhelming, not having anyone to speak your native language is beyond frightening to say the least! We spent the afternoon coloring, and playing with play-Doh. Having some sort of familiarity to someone, even if I was stranger, brought some security that she was understood. Understanding a non-English speaker in a language they understand makes healthcare universal and satisfying.”

Thank you, Rui, for being a part of the Children’s team. Your enthusiasm, talents, and ability to connect with our patients and families are invaluable!
