Great Clips cut-a-thon returns to support kids returning to school after serious illness

Great Clips® salons host cut-a-thon Aug. 28-Sept. 3 to fundraise for Children’s Minnesota’s school re-entry program

MINNEAPOLIS (August 27, 2021) –Great Clips salons in the Twin Cities area are joining together for the 28th annual Great Clips cut-a-thon from Saturday, Aug. 28 to Friday, Sept. 3. After being canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, participating Great Clips salons will once again donate a portion of proceeds from each haircut to the school re-entry program at Children’s Minnesota. The program helps address the medical and emotional needs of a child returning to school after battling cancer or other serious illnesses.

“Our amazing patients fight so hard to reach recovery, but then face the challenge of going back to school. Kids sometimes get bullied only because of a lack of understanding. The school re-entry program works with patients, families and schools to help kids transition smoothly back to class,” said Jennifer Soderholm, chief development officer and president of the Children’s Minnesota Foundation. “Great Clips helped start this program and continues to be a champion for the patients and families of the Children’s Minnesota community.”

The cut-a-thon started 29 years ago when local Great Clips franchisee Regina Finkelstein, also a real estate agent, was helping Brett Weiber’s parents Margi and Dean find a home. Brett was battling cancer and Regina decided to start the cut-a-thon to raise funds for Children’s Minnesota. After the first year, the school re-entry program was founded and the cut-a-thons have raised more than $1.6 million to-date. Brett passed away in 2019 at the age of 33.

“When I met Margi and Dean and heard about Brett’s journey, I knew I had to do something to help other families going through a tough diagnosis,” said Finkelstein. “Brett was a joy to know and his memory will live on. After missing a year due to COVID-19, my fellow Great Clips franchisees and I are ready to once again hold the cut-a-thon and help kids get back to school.”
