Neurodevelopment is a term that describes how our brains grow and form connections that direct our function and behaviors. Infants and children with congenital heart defects are at risk for delays in areas such as motor skills, coordination and learning. Early and periodic evaluation is recommended for infants and children with congenital heart conditions to help them develop to their fullest potential.

A cardiac MRI is recommended for patients who require analysis of dynamic cardiac flows, wall motion, ventricular volume, and ventricular function. Children’s Minnesota offers access to pediatric-trained radiologists who work closely with cardiologists to perform the tests. Imaging experts and pediatric cardiologists, Dr. Angella Kelle and Dr. Charles Shepard, are also part of the team. Thanks to the expertise and training of Dr. Kelle, Dr. Shepard, and the other team members, tests can be performed quickly, reducing the need for children to remain still for prolonged periods and minimizing radiation exposure.
Research studies are ongoing in all areas of the hospital and clinics. The cardiovascular team is actively publishing research and articles. In the past ten years, more than 40 articles have been published in peer reviewed publications.
