Overview
We’re here to help you get answers
Our pharmacists and genetic counselors are available to help you determine whether pharmacogenomic testing may be helpful for your patient. This relatively new field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to prescribe effective, safe medications and doses tailored to a person’s genetic makeup. Children’s Minnesota is proud to offer this program as one of only a few in the country. We aim to help you prescribe the right medication and dose for optimal benefit while minimizing side effects, using data-driven predictions to reduce the burden of trial and error in medication use.
If you have questions regarding pharmacogenomic testing, contact Children’s Minnesota Physician Access at 866-755-2121.
Pharmacogenomic testing
Pharmacogenomic services are available to evaluate patients for pharmacogenomic testing, interpret test results and provide evidence-based recommendations. Patients will be seen in the clinic by a pharmacogenomics pharmacist and a genetic counselor. If you have a patient who may benefit from pharmacogenomic testing, they may be referred to the Pharmacogenomics clinic for evaluation.
Pharmacogenomic testing should be considered for patients with any of the following:
- Experienced an adverse drug reaction to one or more medications
- Inadequate or no therapeutic response to one or more medications
- Polypharmacy –- five or more medications
- Patient is immature or otherwise non-verbal and unable to communicate regarding medication response
- Patient is in foster care or adopted with limited family history
- Family history of significant adverse drug reaction
- Planned treatment with a high-risk medication for which testing is indicated
- Patient has recently started or expected to start a medication where the dose is adjusted based on their genetic information, following Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC®) guidelines or U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommendations
- Patient will be undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation
- Patient will be undergoing a liver transplant
