Pediatric Otolaryngology Research fellowship

Jim Sidman Pediatric Otolaryngology Research Fellowship

Dr. Jim Sidman, a pioneer in pediatric otolaryngology, left an enduring legacy as both a leading clinician and an innovative researcher. His commitment to advancing care for children with complex ear, nose, and throat conditions was matched only by his dedication to mentoring young physicians and scientists. The research fellowship supports fellows’ pursuit of scientific inquiry and allows them to develop deep relationships with well-established mentors in ENT research.

What makes our otolaryngology research fellowship exceptional

This one-year fellowship provides the unique opportunity to work closely with leading pediatric otolaryngologists, gain hands-on research experience, and contribute to important advancements in the field. Under the mentorship of our faculty, you will sharpen your academic skills, develop and execute research projects, and author publications that will help shape the future of pediatric otolaryngology. We are committed to supporting you throughout this process, including providing financial support for the publication and presentation of your work at national conferences. In return, we ask for your hard work, dedication, and commitment to the rigorous standards that we have set in the Division.

Eligibility

The Fellowship Program offers medical students enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools the opportunity to spend 1-2 years conducting non-exclusive intensive work in clinical research within the department of Pediatric ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery at Children’s Minnesota. Fellows are selected on the basis of a competitive application. The Fellowship seeks individuals with demonstrated academic achievement and an earnest interest in Otolaryngology. Although applicants may have prior research experience, applications are also encouraged from students without extensive prior research experience.

Applications are encouraged from second and third-year medical students. 1st and 4th-year medical student applications will be reviewed on an ad hoc basis according to program vacancies. There are no citizenship requirements for application, but those who are not U.S. citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa. The Fellowship will not handle visa matters for applicants. The Fellowship is designed to run concurrently with medical school classes and curriculum. Children’s ENT and Facial Plastic Surgery is committed to promoting diversity in the biomedical and scientific community. We strongly encourage applicants from members of underrepresented or historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Program schedule

The fellowship runs approximately one year, September through September. Applications open up late May/early June and are reviewed over the summer. Applicants will be notified in August of acceptance.

Comments from current research fellows

“The Jim Sidman Pediatric Otolaryngology Research Fellowship has been vital to both my academic and professional development throughout this past year. I have gained valuable skills in data analysis, scientific writing, and in becoming a productive medical student researcher, thanks to the established curriculum and structured mentorship provided by this fellowship. The unique opportunity to develop these skills and contribute to advancements in the field, all while working as a full-time medical student, is an invaluable experience and one I highly recommend to anyone interested in a career in pediatric otolaryngology.”

“The people who surround you help shape who you become. My mentors are a primary reason I chose to pursue medicine and was ultimately accepted into medical school. The Jim Sidman Research Fellowship pairs you with mentors who won’t simply act as sponsors for your clinical career, but also serve as role models, collaborators, and catalysts for both personal and professional growth. In addition to challenging how I approach research, the mentorship and guidance I’ve received through this program have helped me become a more confident and intentional student doctor.”

“The Jim Sidman Fellowship Program gave me the opportunity to work closely with incredible mentors at Children’s while engaging exclusively with a pediatric population, which I found both unique and rewarding. Learning the steps of the research process while leading my own project has been a great way to learn about what it takes to take a project from start to finish and made me a more competent and confident clinical researcher.”
