Children’s Minnesota announces new chiefs of surgery and critical care

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (Feb. 24, 2026) — Children’s Minnesota is pleased to announce the appointments of Heidi Kamrath, DO, neonatologist, to professional staff chief of critical care, and Joshua Short, MD, PhD, to professional staff chief of surgery. 

Dr. Kamrath has been a neonatologist at Children’s Minnesota since September 2016. She served as the associate chief-elect of critical care from 2023-2025 and has served as the Children’s Minnesota associate chief of critical care since then. Dr. Kamrath is currently the medical director for the Children’s Minnesota Intensive Care Follow-up Clinic and the neonatal director for the Midwest Fetal Care Center. Dr. Kamrath brings a distinguished career marked by clinical excellence in the full spectrum of neonatology and bioethical services. 

She completed her undergraduate education at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. where she studied biology, chemistry, and religion. After college, she attended medical school at Des Moines University, followed by a pediatric residency, chief residency and neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship at the University of Minnesota. During her fellowship she completed a Certificate of Pediatric Bioethics at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. 

Dr. Short has been active on the Children’s Minnesota Professional Staff since July 2015.  He has been serving as director of surgical quality since 2021 and helped secure Children’s Minnesota’s reverification as a Level 1 Pediatric Surgical Program. Dr. Short brings a distinguished career marked by clinical excellence in the full spectrum of neonatal/pediatric diseases and minimally invasive surgical approaches. He has authored numerous publications in pediatric surgical care. 

Dr. Short is a graduate of the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Medicine and completed two general surgery residencies, one at the University of Alabama Birmingham and another at Hennepin County Medical Center. He went on to complete a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and bariatrics at the University of Minnesota, and a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers.
