“This redesignation is a meaningful recognition of the skill, preparedness and teamwork our St. Paul providers and staff bring to every shift,” said David Hirschman, MD, associate trauma medical director at Children’s Minnesota. “For patients and families, it reinforces that they can count on Children’s Minnesota for timely, high-quality trauma care close to home.”
As a Level 4 trauma center, Children’s Minnesota hospital in St. Paul has the resources for emergency resuscitation and care of children with injuries. Some critically injured patients and those requiring more specialized trauma care may require transfer to the pediatric health system’s Minneapolis hospital. St. Paul is equipped to expedite transfers when necessary.
As part of the redesignation process, MDH conducted a site visit where they met with Children’s Minnesota leaders to discuss the hospital’s trauma program, understand its processes and procedures to care for trauma patients, verify the presence of required equipment and validate that the system meets the required criteria.
