We would like to extend our congratulations to Dr. Kris Ann Schultz, who was named the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic Endowed Chair in Cancer and Blood Disorders research in 2020!

When the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic Endowed Chair was named, a gift of $2 million is given to support a leading scientist – Dr. Schultz – making it possible to accelerate research to advance innovations in care and treatments for patients and their families.

What is the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic?

The Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic was established to raise funds to support research to lessen the suffering caused by childhood cancer. Since 1987, the Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic has raised more than $5 million for cancer research at Children’s Minnesota. Through these efforts, Children’s Minnesota has become internationally recognized for collaborative rare tumor research and supportive care research which has increased survival rates and improved quality of life for children with cancer, allowing them to not only survive, but thrive.

What is an Endowed Chair?

An Endowed Chair is a hospital position permanently funded by the allocations from an endowment fund specifically established for this purpose. The position is usually designated for a specific clinical or scientific area (department, field of medicine, etc.) at Children’s Minnesota. Contributions go toward a named Endowment, and allocations from this Endowment support the Chair’s work to advance the mission.

How will the new Endowed Chair at Children’s Minnesota help further research and help kids’ health?

Endowed positions offer leading Children’s Minnesota physicians and department leaders essential funding for important advancements in patient care and research. The continued funding from a Chair enables medical leaders to innovate, launch new initiatives and bridge funding from other sources to ensure continuity of their pioneering work. Children’s Minnesota provides innovative research and treatment for rare, relapsed and recurrent cancers, in addition to offering advanced, individualized care for newly diagnosed children, teens and young adults with cancers and blood disorders. As the new Pine Tree Apple Tennis Classic Endowed Chair in Cancer and Blood Disorders research will allow Dr. Schultz and her team to continue their dedicated and innovative work in cancer and blood disorder research.
