Going green: Children’s Minnesota recognized for sustainability initiatives

Children’s Minnesota is proud to be recognized as a Partner for Change Award recipient by Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care!

The Partner for Change Award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand programs to eliminate mercury, reduce and recycle waste, source products sustainably, and more. Winning facilities must demonstrate that they are recycling at least 15% of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are on track to eliminate mercury, and have developed successful sustainability programs in many areas.

“Children’s Minnesota has consistently stepped up to proactively seek ways to improve its sustainability efforts,” said Jim Leste, vice president of support operations. “We’re proud to be receiving this honor and to begin working with Practice Greenhealth on improving our practices, recognizing we have additional opportunities to improve.”

Children’s joined Practice Greenhealth at the end of 2018 to gain access to best practice insights from other hospitals as well as receive a tailored gap analysis by Practice Greenhealth to support efforts to improve green initiatives.

Children’s will begin implementing recommendations to further bolster its green initiatives once it receives the gap analysis by Practice Greenhealth. Plans are already underway to begin a composting program in the Children’s Minneapolis campus later this year. Furthermore, an internal multidisciplinary sustainability team will be formed to lead this charge.
