In celebration of the diverse perspectives that drive our mission, we are excited to highlight Ahmed, medical lab scientist lead and member of our Muslim ERG.

Tell us about your role and what you love most about it.
“I am a medical lab scientist lead on the evening shift at Children’s Minnesota. In my role, I support the lab team and ensure tests are completed accurately, on time and troubleshoot any issues that arise. I work across multiple departments, including hematology, chemistry, processing and blood bank. What I love most about my role is knowing that our work directly helps clinicians make informed decisions for a child’s care and treatment.”
What motivated you to join Children’s Minnesota’s Muslim ERG and how has it shaped your sense of belonging here?
“I joined the Muslim ERG to connect with colleagues and share experiences. The ERG helps me feel supported and understood, which strengthens my sense of belonging.”
Are there Somali Muslim values that you find yourself bringing into your leadership style or teamwork?
“Yes. Somali Muslim culture emphasizes respect, responsibility and helping one another — values that align closely with Children’s Minnesota’s commitment to collaboration and compassion. As a lead, I strive to support my team, listen carefully and work together to solve problems. These principles not only reflect my cultural background but also strengthen our shared organizational values and inclusive workplace.”
How can allies best support their Somali and Muslim colleagues throughout the year, not just during religious holidays?
“Allies can support colleagues by fostering respect, curiosity and understanding every day — not just during holidays. This means being open to learning about different perspectives, showing flexibility when possible and treating everyone fairly and kindly. Consistent support helps create an inclusive environment where all team members feel valued and connected. Our organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion makes this possible.”
Are there any “hidden gems” of Somali culture that you’d like to share with us?
“Somali food like sambusas, rice dishes, and Somali tea (shaah) are very special. Somali poetry and music are also important, as they share stories and bring people together.”
